Concerning Cutch's and Walker's 'lulls'...

Isn't Cutch still batting a collective .900+ OPS this month and/or since the break?

Didn't Walker have a 4/5 RBI night earlier this week?

Baseball, both individually and collectively, is like Blackjack; play 100 hands, hope to win 51. Anything more is just gravy.

Let's not go full yinzer here.

Cutch's OPS this month is .789. If that's a slump I'll gladly take that.

It's amazing how some are writing off the season based on a week of bad games. Are there concerns with the pitching? Yes, but man you'd think they were on pace to lose 100 games sometimes.

I don't think anyone is writing off the season.

We got very excited by an unexpected, and un-form, power surge and we moved up the standings to challenge Cincinnati for the lead. Since then, the Braves have gotten hot, the Cardinals are closing in and both the Dodgers and Giants are within striking distance. We've seen MacDonald implode and Cutch has been a little less "clutch". Of course, we're happy to be in this position, but it is not as rosy as it was two weeks ago.

Not going to lie:

I am glad I wasn't following this one until the 5th inning.

---

August 12, 2011: Bucs 56-61, 5 days removed from the season-killing 10 game losing steak.

August 12, 2012: Bucs 64-50, less than 5 games removed from first place!

---

The Bucs get the Pads again next week, at Petco (Mon 20th-Wed 22nd). Take [vengeance] that series and it will be another team that they will have done .500 or better against for the year (Cards and Mets only 2 other teams >.500 vs. Bucs).

Keep it up, Bucs!

Not to throw a damp blanket on the enthusiasm about the upcoming series versus the Dodgers, but the Bucs are going to have to play much better ball than what we saw against the Padres.

And, even if we go back a bit, much better ball than was played against Houston.

Two teams the Bucs should have had an easier time beating (even though the Pirates did win the series against Houston).

Hmmm, I leave the house to take my wife to a play and dinner with the Pirates losing 4-zip. We return home and I find they won, 11-5. Amazing. Can hardly wait to find out how they did it.

Today's win was merely a band-aid on a wound that quickly needs a tourniquet - beginning with the starting pitching and extending to the offense. Way too many poor ABs in key situations.

For all practical purposes, the next 7 days involve playoff baseball.

Agreed. Had the Padres been a good team, Bedard and the Pirates more than likely would have paid dearly for their lapses. And we'd be left wondering whether and how they'd be able to stop the bleeding.

While today's W is gratifying, let us not assume that, of course, it will carry over to the series against the Dodgers.

You better believe it. Bad pitching, poor at bats(as you said), and really bad defense lately.

Hate to put so much on his shoulders, because he has been unbelievable, but Cutch has to start hitting with authority again. As he goes, so goes the team(offensively speaking). As for the pitching...I think if you have to boil it down to one spot it is James McDonald. If he can get back to where he was the starters will be fine. We assumed the fifth spot in the rotation would be hit or miss. The starters need to save the bullpen arms a bit right now.

That's what I'm saying too No. 9. The Pirates are still in a nice place right now, but I feel they are lucky (at least recently) to be in that nice place.

The losses have been to "way-below" .500 teams and the wins have come against those teams but with not without a struggle.

The Pirates need to start playing much better ball to stay in this playoff race.

The thing about tourniquets though is 'life over limb'. Leave 'em on too long and it requires amputation.

So who then will become the 'amputee'?

I'm a newcomer to the Pirates online community, it's interesting to see the variety of opinions and expectations... I just bought season tickets before the all-star break, and I'm excited to see what happens the rest of the way. For years I've wanted to get season tickets, but not for a terrible team, that's no fun at all. I've been waiting for the Buccos to field a winner for years, and finally I realized in early July that this was probably the year. It remains to be seen just what they will and won't achieve this year, but that's what I will find out as a new season ticket holder. Check out my new blog if you're interested, finally this experience and hoping to see a "New Experience" at PNC Park this year...

Here's the first, introductory, post -- Season Tickets for the Rest of 2012
Here's the most recent -- SeasonTicketsBaby.com

I welcome any feedback or contributions, pictures, videos, comments, etc!

The Pirates will be tested over the next week against LA and StL!!!

I have to admit I was getting pretty pessimistic, fearing a collapse like we saw last year.

3-4 in the last 7 is not good, but it is way better than 2-5, and coming from 5 down to score 11 unanswered is quite a morale boost.

I hope we can somehow re-capture the magic and get hot. I don't want a wild card, I want the division!
