I'll have to mention that the fact that Cutch was not closer to Marte, when he jumped to try to catch the ball on the wall, to play the carom off the wall more quickly, points to Cutch allowing the runner to circle the base pads for an inside the park home run.

One point mentioned last night about that play was from Bob Walk. He did say that the only reason Cutch might have arrived late to play the carom was maybe because he was playing further over in right center field. But, according to Walk, because of who was batting, that probably wasn't plausible. Note: There didn't seem to be a camera angle showing where Cutch was when Marte jumped up to try to catch the ball agaimst the wall in RF.

I think Cutch was "watching the play by Marte" instead of thinking about how to play the possible carom off the wall.

The run didn't affect how the game ended, but who knows now how that first run turned game around?

In any event, I think it's a valuable lesson to be learned by Cutch and all of the Pirate outfielders.

Barmes and Sanchez both stranded 2 hitting into a DP. They both become the leading candidates for me. Barmes wins out because he had more at bats than Sanchez to impact the game.

This is a tough one to pick because it was a pretty well played game outside of the silent bats. Another reason why I would disagree with you to some extent because with all things equal I think season performance does become the tie breaker.

...so what about Jones' 0-4 with 3 stranded and 3 K's?

The goats were McCutchen for failing to back up Marte and Wandy for letting a pitcher hit a home run off of him.

The DP balls were killer though. It would have been preferable for Barmes and Sanchez to strike out like Jones compared to what they did.

I'd say the Goat is Marte. 0-4 is bad enough but he also misplayed (a tough ball to be sure) the inside-the-park HR. This is one could go in many different directions, depending on perspective.

I commend Marte for going after that ball. The real issue with that play was the lack of backup provided by Cutch, or lack of.
