It's just one loss out of 162 games. Just one loss out of a 3 game series. Let's not get all "Chicken Little" again. Tomorrow is another day. Couple things I liked about today's game. Nice Pirate debut from the guy who probably scares us the most, Chad Qualls. Nice at bat from Marte in the 9th...fighting off pitch after pitch before grounding out. Stars are going to have to be a little unconventional tonight. Tough to pick stars with just 4 singles in a game. I did not see the game at all, so if I miss something, let me know.

STARTER: Rodriguez wasn't bad. Couple of Flukey hits did him in. Still, just 3 runs in 7 innings against the Reds at the GAB isn't bad. Calling this an OK start.

LOSER: Despite the OK start, Rodriguez loses again, dropping to 7-10, 3.82.

GOAT: VOTE FOR THE GOAT....Vote for tonight's goat. Let me know you think it should be. Will update this tomorrow after everyone has a chance to give their say. The candidates. GJones went 0-4, with 3 Ks and stranded 3 runners on base. Marte went 0-4 with a K and a DP, stranding a runner. Did not see the Inside-The-Park-HR. Did he have any blame there? Clint Barmes. Went 0-2, grounded into a DP and stranded two runners. Gaby Sanchez. Just one at bat, a PH with 2 on and just one out in the 8th. He represented they tying run. Hit into inning ending DP. Write-in candidate?? Give me your vote and reason why!

STAR #3: Chad Qualls. It wasn't much. Just one perfect inning of relief. But he is the only guy who really did his job tonight without fail. Fast work. 9 pitches. 7 strikes. Hopefully Searage can work his magic with Qualls like he has the rest of the pen.

STAR #2: Cutch. Wasn't much, but had one of the 4 Pirate hits and got on base in 9th with HBP. Loved the way he took that and went to first.

STAR #1: Not much to cheer about, so giving this to the Fort, who got one of only 4 Pirate hits, a PH in the 8th, which brought the tying run to the plate.

I'd say the Goat is Marte. 0-4 is bad enough but he also misplayed (a tough ball to be sure) the inside-the-park HR. This is one could go in many different directions, depending on perspective.

Goat = Barmes

I can't expect Marte in his second week in the majors to have the maturity not to go for that ball off the top of the wall.

Just remember, please, the vote is for THIS GAME ONLY.... Don't vote Barmes because he think he has sucked all year. Just pick TODAY's GOAT!

Barmes sucked with the bat, but made it up with two defensive plays in the 8th when every out was critical.

Barmes and Sanchez both stranded 2 hitting into a DP. They both become the leading candidates for me. Barmes wins out because he had more at bats than Sanchez to impact the game.

This is a tough one to pick because it was a pretty well played game outside of the silent bats. Another reason why I would disagree with you to some extent because with all things equal I think season performance does become the tie breaker.

I'll have to mention that the fact that Cutch was not closer to Marte, when he jumped to try to catch the ball on the wall, to play the carom off the wall more quickly, points to Cutch allowing the runner to circle the base pads for an inside the park home run.

One point mentioned last night about that play was from Bob Walk. He did say that the only reason Cutch might have arrived late to play the carom was maybe because he was playing further over in right center field. But, according to Walk, because of who was batting, that probably wasn't plausible. Note: There didn't seem to be a camera angle showing where Cutch was when Marte jumped up to try to catch the ball agaimst the wall in RF.

I think Cutch was "watching the play by Marte" instead of thinking about how to play the possible carom off the wall.

The run didn't affect how the game ended, but who knows now how that first run turned game around?

In any event, I think it's a valuable lesson to be learned by Cutch and all of the Pirate outfielders.

...so what about Jones' 0-4 with 3 stranded and 3 K's?

The goats were McCutchen for failing to back up Marte and Wandy for letting a pitcher hit a home run off of him.

The DP balls were killer though. It would have been preferable for Barmes and Sanchez to strike out like Jones compared to what they did.

I commend Marte for going after that ball. The real issue with that play was the lack of backup provided by Cutch, or lack of.
