I guess Russell doesn't prescribe to the lefty righty theory. I am confused. But it works I guess.

Usually it's his favorite play, surprised he did what he did as well.

Kudos to Monroe, Cutch, and Hinske in this one. By far our best hitters in this game because they didn't swing away wildly. Way to make 'em work fellas. This no Moss thing seems to be working out well (thank god).

Is this the same Steven Jackson that started for the Yankees in the playoff game against the Inidians in the first "Major League"?.

Remember Pete Vuckovich as the first baseman?

Pretty tough game to watch, as the Pirates should have won by something like 10-0.

Ohlendorf pitched well, but threw a ton of pitches in the first two innings. That meant he could not go 7, and necessitated bringing in the worst pitcher in the bullpen for the 7th - Steven Jackson. He was never my favorite of the Jackson Five and has not endeared himself with his work on the Pirates.

Diaz swings at anything. That is going to be a weakness in his game for the rest of his career. It is why he cannot be a starting catcher, IMO. If he had some knowledge of the strike zone, to go along with his hitting ability, then he would play a lot. But he is just too impatient to be an everyday player.

McCutchen had some very good at bats. If he falls behind, he does a good job of laying off pitches just out of the strike zone and working the count even. He then gets better pitches to hit. He also can work a walk.

Andy Laroche had some poor at bats. He did a good job working the count full in the first inning, then rapped a single, but the rest of the game he looked like Robinzon Diaz. He was hacking at pretty questionable pitches. That is not his game.

Too bad that Charlie Morton cannot go on Tuesday. I was hoping to see him out there, throwing 94-95 mph down in the zone.

Finally, the game showed a brief clip of Kerrigan working with Morton to test his ability to throw on Tuesday. Kerrigan was wearing shin guards, chest protector and mask. Talk about hands on ... he is catching a guy who is probably throwing 90 mph in bullpen sessions.

I think that is why Jaramillo is getting the bulk of the starts.

As for catching bullpens, I know the feeling. Just caught one Wednesday. No. 1 was asking me to watch his arm slot. I told him I couldn't do that and catch the pitch too. LOL

I think you are right.

Two points:

(1) You are still able to catch No. 1, who is a lefty throwing mid to upper 80's. Not many on this board can make the same claim.

(2) Cannot watch arm slot and still catch the ball. :D  Funny and accurate.

Thanks, Eric, great photos. That was a terrific PR ploy to have the Pens at the Bucs game. Is it too much to hope that the winning rubs off on the Buccos? Yeah, guess so.

Eric:

Nice photos, and you have good vision. That is indeed Guerin in the broadcast booth, talking to Everett and Walk.

I figured I'd add some pictures as well. Luckily the wife didn't want to go to the game today, so I bought a ticket to get as close to the field as possible for the Stanley Cup.

I think a panorama picture is always required when you have this view of the city:

Should have called in No. 9. I bet he could do both.

P.S. - I just realized that some might read that as sarcasm. It wasn't.

He keeps threatening to blow in for a bullpen session. Maybe some golf too?

Catchers are a valuable commodity, even for pitching lessons. No. 9 is a welcome guest for all board members who are young enough to pitch, or old enough to have a son who pitches. :D

I am sad to report that I qualify as the latter.
