It could mean something....it could mean nothing....it could be me imagining things....but does it seem like Pedro is REALLY crushing the ball this year? He hit some blasts last year, but that HR today and 2 of his homers that left the yard at PNC were eye-popping.

I'm optimistically thinking that maybe he's squaring pitches up better and it'll lead to some more success in the future. He's such a gamechanger. There are guys on this team who can make you pay for a mistake, but Pedro is just on another level there. You can make a decent pitch and he can still hit it out (like the home run to left field against Houston that he hit off the end of the bat...just ridiculous strength).

I've always been a Pedro fan. Just wish he would smooth out his highs and lows a bit and become more consistent at the plate.

His bat is definitely a game changer. With one swing, he can do a lot of damage.

That bat is great to have in the line up.

The one thing I find a tad disconcerting about this is that that swing isn't translating to more XBHs that aren't of the variety that are launched over the wall. Obviously, the HRs are the most important and he is currently on pace to repeat a 30 or 30+ HR season (and the 16 HRs in three months as a rookie was very good as well), which is outstanding. The fact that so far this year he has just one double however seems pretty representative of the stereotypical "three true outcome" player cliche. I'd like to see that stroke tack on the types of doubles numbers of year's past and the rookie season as well. This isn't one of these tedious, "what kind of hitter is Alvarez" points in which it seems like half a dozen threads are created about a month, I'm pretty content that, at least tentatively, Alvarez is exactly who he is as a hitter and believe he will ultimately provide above average production at his position with elite power numbers, while still optimistic that at his age he can become a more balanced hitter than simply a Carlos Pena type. I would just like to see that stroke producing a little bit more gap shots and line drives for extra bases.

Full disclaimer: I own a red El Toro t-shirt and have 'Dro on my 30-team fantasy team, so... I have stock in the lad.

That said...

---

While El Toro probably is a real life Pedro Cerrano, that doesn't mean he must polarize fans.

It's entirely possible to enjoy his power and be only mildly disappointed when he goes into slumps.

He isn't great and he doesn't 'suck'. He's alright. Hot when he's hot, not when he's not.

Signed,

President: Pedro Alvarez Realist Club

Another Pedro HR, another W.

Four in his last six games.

Coincidence, maybe?: The last three Pirates losses have come with Pedro on the bench.

But that bum should have been released weeks ago...He f'n sucks man!!!

Sorry not everyone refers to him as K'dro all the time or thinks he should be sent back to T Ball after every game he strikes out 2 or more times...
