A few might remember that back in the late 70's, Tom Petty took on the record company when he refused to agree to the price of the album. It was a time when the price had just gone up and his was one of the first with the new sticker price.

I particularly liked (more like laughed), when the one quote mentioned how greedy the artists were. I am sure it is that way in some cases but with pirating and the ipod and computers, it is the only way artists can make money. They sure don't get it from sales as in the past. The business used to be exactly reversed. Band cut an album, then went on the road to promote that album. Hopefully, sales resulted and revenues increased. However, record labels backed the tours which basically broke even or lost money. How did the record co. recoup this cash, well, part of the record deal is that the band must pay back all money incurred in the recording, production, marketing, promoting and touring expenses to the record label before the band makes any money. Individuals who wrote songs would get royalties.

Bravo. We need more of this. Ticketmaster is ridiculous in this era of the internet. It's unnecessary.

You better be one hell of a band with a super strong following if you want to take on Ticketmaster. Pearl Jam attempted it in 1994 and ended up having to cancel their summer tour. They refused to play venues that had contracts with Ticketmaster and that coupled with the refusal to make videos (that were still relevant in those days) about killed their career as a chart topping band. Sales of their 3rd album Vitalogy struggled out of the gates and they only rescued it with some excellent singles on that album like Betterman. There is no doubt that their choice to battle the system hurt their profits and future stature with their label for years.

Bands should not be the ones to take on Ticketmaster; Ticketmaster's competitors should be the ones to take on Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster's strength lies in its exclusive deals with various venues across the country. If a competitor can offer a better deal than what Ticketmaster is offering to each of those venues, Ticketmaster's stranglehold on the industry could break.
