It was the British Baseball National Finals last weekend, at which I was one of the Officials. We held a moving commemmoration on the Sunday, just before the NBL (top league) Final - in which, appropriately, one of the teams was the Lakenheath Diamondbacks who are composed of American Servicemen based at RAF(USAF) Lakenheath. I read a short peroration on the PA; there was a minute's silence; and we then played both National Anthems. In a symbiotic gesture with the NY Fire Department, we had a delegation from the local Fire Service, one of whose Firefighters threw out the ceremonial first pitch. The whole thing was very moving, and I was proud to be part of it.
There followed a very exciting Game, which your guys lost.

Like most significant dates there is an historical resonance about 9/11. Amongst the many events that have occurred on that date, two have a curious coincidence:

1. The island of Manhattan was first discovered by Henry Hudson on the 11th September 1609.
2. September 11th 1941 was when ground was first broken for the construction of the Pentagon.

On a lighter note, did you know that September 11th was also the date on which the Minstrel Song "Oh! Susannah" was first performed? That was in a saloon in the Burgh.
