How early will you draft Willingham tonight, since you were so hot to keep him?

Oh, smack talk from the non-winners?

Yawn. Better luck this year.

You will obviously need it. :D

But how will you possibly win without Luke Scott? ;)

Pssst ... Willingham has more R's, RBI's, HR's and a higher OBP than Longoria.

So does Hardy.

I guess that is a horrendous kind of "good news."

No, it's not. Longoria can kiss my ass.

I'll trade you Willingham for Longoria if that would make you happy...

Here is my take, for what it's worth.

Players that lose the first month of the season due to injury almost never have a good season, let alone a great one. Last year, Cliff Lee missed April and he was pretty average for the year in terms of production. 12 wins, okay ERA, 185 K's. Really nothing that special.

This year, he could win 20, log an ERA of about 2.80 and get 220 K's. The difference is not throwing away the first month.

The loss of the first month just seems to drag a player down more than an injury in July, for example. By July, the player is obviously 100% up to game speed, and is going to get a slight benefit from some time off in the brutal heat.

But losing April ... the guy spends time in the minors trying to get into game shape. Then the move to the majors takes a while. So he spends another 2 weeks even after getting off the DL before he can play.

After he finally starts to play, his performance lags until he gets up to "game speed." That can take another 7-10 days. So the 4 weeks on the DL in April winds up adding another 2 weeks in the minors and 2 weeks getting up to speed in the majors, basically blowing 2 months ... or 1/3 of the season.

Finally, Greinke was my number 3 pitcher, Longoria my number 1 hitter. Losing both for all of April essentially tanks the season.

Hmmmm. So what you are saying is that you'll throw in Grienke if I throw in Luke Scott?? It's a done deal, let's get the paperwork taken care of.
