My folks were in town yesterday and we headed down to Bradenton for the ballgame with some Rays fans coworkers of mine. Some thoughts:

1. What a perfect day for a ballgame! It was sunny and 80 degrees with a nice breeze. We were in the top row of Section 1 (behind home plate) and had a wonderful breeze for the whole game. Since it was "Opening Day", we received refrigerator magnet schedules.

2. What a perfect day for Cutch! Both of his homers went to opposite fields and he had a nice display of power.

3. Correia had a rough start to the game. I don't know much about his history, but unless he is a pitcher who gets in trouble early and then finds his groove, he may be a point of concern, especially in close games.

4. From the way it looked, Jarmillo's homer was courtesy of the wind. It didn't appear that it would leave the park, but kept traveling.

5. Ryan Doumit's double was a gift from the baseball Gods. Desmond Jennings should have had the ball. As a Rays fan, I am concerned about his fielding (amongst other attributes). I do pity the guy, as he has to fill Carl Crawford's shoes.

6. Chase D'Arnaud showed great patience at the plate with his four pitch walk. He also had a nice single in his next at bat.

7. Neil Walker really impressed me with his hustle on his triple. It was a close play and he had to verify with the umpire more than once that he was safe.

8. Josh Fields will be back in minor league camp by the end of the week.

9. We were disappointed not to see Duquesne's own Joe Beimel yesterday, as he was scheduled to pitch. Apparently, he sat out due to soreness.

10. I was hoping to see Tony Sanchez play today, but he didn't get in. He kept teasing us by catching in between innings, but he never got in the game.

11. IMO, Bradenton has the best hot dogs in the Grapefruit League. Also, they have a great beer selection, including a 32 ounce beer for the "bargain" price of $9. The kettle corn is also fantastic.

10. I saw Frank Coonelly in the stands as well as Neil Huntingdon. Since the ballpark was full yesterday (albeit 2/3 of the fans were Rays fans), I can only assume payroll will go up 8-)

11. The seagulls made their customary appearance in the later innings.

That's all I can think of for now. Next game report will be from Clearwater on Saturday.

Good report, PoP. Ironic, I guess, that a guy named "Fields" is so bad at fielding.

Thanks PoP.

Tell me more about Fields.

Was it just the one play that he booted or does he just look bad overall? I thought he was a candidate for the big club and thus would be around until the last week.

Thanks for the great report PoP! Were Alvarez and Tabata in the game and if so how did they do?

Ralphie, Fields looked lost at the plate. Perhaps he just had a bad day, but he got nothing going yesterday.

Bassoon, Alvarez and Tabata both played yesterday, but got only one hit between them. Their performances were nothing to write home about, but I think they'll come around.
