The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Jose Bautista from the Pirates today for a player to be named later.
Bautista, 27, is currently with triple-A Indianapolis. He appeared in 107 games with Pittsburgh this season, hitting .242 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Bye Bye Jose

Well, there's the move that will put the Blue Jays over the top. J.P. Ricciardi just continues to baffle.

Very interesting, indeed.

Bautista is a good guy, and always showed a positive attitude and full effort for the Pirates. I hope that he does well for the Jays.

Sadly, Batleasta will probably hit .290 next year with 20 homers.

Chalk this one up to being dumb about management practices, but... how did this happen with the trade deadline already having passed a few weeks ago?

I'm amazed Ricciardi hasn't been fired yet.

Basically, July 31 means from that point on, players cannot be traded unless they clear waivers. In this case, Bautista apparently was placed on waivers and was not claimed by any team. Had he been claimed by another team, the Pirates could have tried to work out a trade with them or pulled him back off of the waiver wire, at which point he would no longer be able to be traded.

Often times, if one player gets through waivers, the other player is "named later", "later" being after the season so that the second player doesn't have to go through waivers. However, in this case, since Bautista had pretty much zero value, its probably just your typical junk PTBNL.

He was very average at best. He may have a day or two for someone else but IMO we gave up noghing and the PTBNL will be as good as we can get for him.

Still I hope he does ok for another team.

I always liked Bautista and still do. He has some pop and has a better than average glove. I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn up at 3rd, 2nd and the outfield for the Jays. He was moving all around while in Indy. Showcase. We might get something decent for him.

I also liked Bautista. He falls into the same category, albeit different personalities, as Jose Castillo. I was really disappointed that Bautista didn't turn it up a notch this year. A little pop, decent strike zone recognition, solid glove, good attitude. I felt the same about Castillo. Two years ago I thought he'd have a breakout year. Oh well, 0 for 2 on those predictions. Hopefully he does well in Toronto. He seemed like a good guy.

It really seems very clear that NH wants to totally reshape this team into his own. I wonder who is next? Wilson? At this rate, there will be no players left from the previous management by next year.

If that's true, then I think it's a good sign. It shows that Neal is really investing himself and his personal interest into the future of the team.

Yeah, you are probably correct! Certainly, this current team has done....nothing! Or, the Bucs have done zero for the past 15+ years, so if NH wants to make changes, all we can do is trust his judgment....for now. Thus far, I'm satisfied with his changes. I'm certain that more changes are in the future.

I don't think it's a case of NH wanting to "reshape the team into his own". He just wants better players. Maholm, McLouth, and Doumit weren't his guys, but I don't sense that any "reshaping" will be done on those guys.

As a starting third baseman, Bautista is below average and probably always will be. And that's not good enough. He's still a decent ballplayer though.

The reasons I can think of (or have read about) for the timing of this trade were 1. to dump Bautista's salary - he was making about $2 mil, which is a lot for the Pirates, 2. to get him off the 40 man roster so they can bring someone else up and see what they have in some of these prospects in September, and 3. partially clear the ridiculous log jam they're going to have at third base next year. At first the timing seemed a little strange...Bautista's value is rock bottom, and they got a player to be named later for him, which is code for "jack squat." It seems like they could have gotten more for a guy who used to be an everyday starter. But I guess for his value to get any higher, they'd have to wait until he got some quality ABs either in the majors or AAA next year. Out with the old, in with the new I guess...

I don't see there being a logjam at third at the start of next year. LaRoche will be the starter, Walker will still be at AAA because he's only hitting .239. Alvarez will start out in A ball.

If Walker starts out strong and shows he is ready to move up, then you have a good problem to solve.

They got a player to be named later. Usually this means NH was given a list of X number of guys, and has to pick one by a certain date.

I would guess we're going to get a decent young player out of the deal.
