Quote:
Former All-Star closer Derrick Turnbow was cut Friday by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Turnbow was 0-1 with a 15.63 ERA in eight games this season and gave up six runs in two-thirds of an inning at Chicago on Wednesday.

He had 39 saves in 2005 and 24 the following year, when he was picked for the NL All-Star team. But he suddenly lost his form at midseason in 2006.

After converting 51 of 55 save chances at the start of his career, he went 0-6 with a 13.06 ERA from July 1 on in 2006 and lost his closer’s job to Francisco Cordero. Turnbow was 4-5 with a 4.63 ERA as a setup man last year.

Milwaukee designated the 30-year-old right-hander for assignment and is responsible for the remainder of his $3.2 million salary this year. The Brewers have 10 days to trade him, place him on unconditional release waivers or send him outright to the minors.

To take Turnbow’s place, Milwaukee recalled outfielder Joe Dillon from Triple-A Nashville.

They must be pretty set with Gagne as the closer, I'd have thought he'd be the insurance guy when the Brewers finally get tired of Gagne

Turnbow is simply terrible right now. I watched him struggle against the Cubs in a blowout. He got two outs, but just could not get the third out.

He was throwing 91, rather than 96-97 like he was in 2006. His breaking ball was nowhere near the strike zone.

I felt bad for the guy. He is a character, who was at one point a dominating closer. His tale should be a lesson to all regarding relief pitchers - many can be found cheap, and most have a short shelf life.

Steroids are also good to make sure you can throw 96-97 miles per hour.

Someone will pick him up and get a pretty good middle reliever. A lot of times with relievers all you need is a change of scenery.
