The Seattle Mariners have placed starting shortstop Jack Wilson(notes) on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hand and selected veteran infielder Chris Woodward(notes) from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners announced the move before Monday night’s game against Oakland— and hours after they fired manager Don Wakamatsu and three coaches.

Wilson broke the fifth metacarpal of his right hand at home early Sunday morning. The team says he slipped and fell in his bathroom, hitting his hand on the floor.

Wilson, who came over in a trade with Pittsburgh last year, is batting .249 in 61 games.

The 34-year-old Woodward was hitting .232 in 103 games at Triple-A. He is a veteran of 10 major league seasons and appeared in 20 games for Seattle last year.

Sounds like a typical wall-punching fracture to me. Like John Smiley..."Uhh, I closed it in a cab door."
