He is right!!! Our GM, who I'm starting to feel more and more neutral about, made this trade, then ran his mouth about how he would be an upgrade for our rotation. The guy had just been released by 2 teams in the past year and was coming off a horrible(and that is being really generous) stretch of games. In addition to claiming him we give up a 22 year old pitcher who Toronto has promptly turned in to a starter who opponents are only hitting .203 against. Now he may never turn in to anything but.....c'mon. This move was ridiculous when it was made and now looks even more ridiculous.
A lot of you guys say "big deal", "blip on the radar", etc. But after all the losing, this is the kind of stuff the media will pick up on. And that's regardless of whether you think that is the media's fault or the Pirates' fault. And once again they are the butt of jokes. This may have been a small change type of move, and yes I know it doesn't mess up the "big picture" rebuilding process. But it's the kind of crap they have to quit doing in my opinion.
Two moves lately should have even the most positive outlookers at least questioning a bit. After hearing the news that Iwamura was going to get released by Tampa but the Pirates feared they could lose him to another team made that trade. If their scouts had done their jobs they wouldn't have felt the need to race to that judgement. And now this Eveland move. Not only make the move but state he would be an upgrade....Ugh.
