When did Larussa start managing the Pirates? What's with Jack hitting 9th?

They needed to surround him in crap with Freddy and Paul, and Michaels now that he has come back to earth...

Does anyone still want to see Michaels play everyday?

Michaels is a great guy to spot start. He and Mientkiewiecz are fantastic bench players. I'd love to see Doug re-signed.

Hey hey...nice shot LaRoche!

Hey, thanks, Matt. Way to pick up your teammates. It's good to see that you've got their backs.

Well what else can be said except this isn't the Matt Capps that started the season.
We need help.
Everybody else in our bullpen held their own tonight except for Capps.
He gave up a lead off double and a 2nd pitch homer to Griffey.
The Reds might have been able to score 8 runs or more off of Capps with how he was pitching tonight.
I don't want to see Capps lose his closing job but something does need to happen quick.

I am a believer in Capps but I'm really getting the feeling that opposing teams have the book on him. His arm isn't powerful enough to blow it by anyone and his control is so good that he doesn't effectively miss his spots.

I actually thought the (non) move of the game was to let Michaels bat in the top of the 9th. There were runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and righty Cordero was pitching. I thought it was a no-brainer to bring in McLouth to pinch hit and play center.

Was McLouth out with an injury tonight? That would be fantastic.

Yes, he injured his knee yesterday.

Oh good, McLouth is injured. I was hoping we'd get to see Michaels and Sanchez at the top of the order for a while.

McLouth's injury sounded minor...a "tweak" is how they described it. I think he needed a day off to clear his head as much as anything.

As for Capps, I've been saying it for some time now. I just don't know that he has good enough stuff to go with his mindset. His mindset is to go right after the hitters. But when your fastball is 90, and straight as an arrow you aren't going to win that battle very often. Heck he threw a fastball up to Ross...David Freakin' Ross... and he crushed it. The pitch to Griffey was dead down the middle. He has to change his approach if he wants to be effective.

With Griffey being the main threat that was coming up that inning it may have been a spot to leave Marte in for the 9th. His stuff is nasty, and he gives lefties fits. Guess hindsight is always 20/20.

Well here is how i saw it.
In the top of the ninth inning when we had runners on second and third if Michaels does anything but strikeout we score one run and go up two , 4-2.then Cordero walked bay.Runners on first and third with one out.Doumits ground ball would have also scored another run , 5-2.So with two out and a runner on second if where we should have been at with a 5-2 lead.but Michaels ruined all that. Also if we had been up 5-2 griffey's homerun would have only made it 5-4.Still the game could have gone either way with the way Capps came in pitching but I do blame it all on Michaels not being able to hit a flyball.

A 90mph fastball coupled with only an 85mph change is usually a receipe for disaster.

Colin -
A couple of points:
(1) I think that Michaels came up to bat with one out. So . . . your analysis is a bit off. A SF or a ground out which scores a run would put the Bucs up 4-2 but they would not have scored another run if Doumit made an out.
(2) You can't be mad at Michaels for striking out in that situation. An out is an out is an out. I'll forward the memo to you that was previously sent to me. I'm certain that Michaels wasn't trying to strike out.

Excellent! The "productive out" debate! My favorite!
