Enough shit has happened with the Pirates over these last 15 years that the cesspool it has created is larger than the state of Pennsylvania. :)

What a horrible year LaRoche is having.

Awful.

LaRoche should not be playing. He doesn't deserve to start at this point.

Greg Brown just raised a very good point. Why didn'T Russell bat Michaels for LaRoche?

I like JR, but I must admit he doesn't seem to be on the ball in this game. Having just said that, Mientkiewicz just hit a deep sac fly to RF. Pirates lead 6-5.

C'mon, Matt, be dominant.

So much for that. And so much for .500, too.

Make note of this game. Not the end of the world, but a definite kick to the scrotum. Lets see how they react from snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Capps was due for a BS.

So how do we like Elijah Dukes fighting with his manager. And not even touching hands after the game just walked right by him.

This loss hurts as much as any in a long time.. still, we can't really complain about Capps because he's been outstanding. It's imperative that we take the next two games though. It truly is. I know we were all hoping to be a game over .500 going into the interleague schedule.. one under will have to do.

I'm telling you this will happen to Capps more and more. He can't stand out there and throw 99% fastballs at 92-93 mph STRAIGHT and almost always in the zone. Teams are starting to tee off on him. He isn't striking many guys out like a dominant closer will. Balls are getting hit hard in 2 out of 3 outings. And you are hearing the same quote from opposing hitters and managers..."swing early because you know you are going to get a strike to hit". He HAS to change his approach a little if he wants to continue to be effective.

Games like last night happen from time to time. However, given (1) the opponent; (2) the timing; and (3) the wasted comeback, the loss is tough to take. Haven't been that grumpy at the end of a game in a long time.

The way I see this is... Its getting increasingly difficult for NH at this point. Bay and Nady are producing and building trade value, but the team is really starting to show signs. For some reason, I feel like this .500 plateau is like an invisible barrior that holds us back, and when we break through that crust, we may see a team that takes off. This is the spot where the Pirates usually tank and we start looking for Steelers news. Last year they gave us hope up to the All-Star break, but subsequently fell of the perverbial table. Whether they respond this year or not remains to be seen, but the veteran leadership that has been making an impact on this team(Menty), probably will not allow them to tank. They won't be division winners, but they will should at least keep us interested until the fields of Latrobe start to see some activity. Also, don't forget, Bay and others might be dealt, its the ugliness of our situation, but, we all knew coming into this season that changes needed to be made.

There's an interesting take on that in today's Washington Times. It says manager Manny Acta objected to Dukes appearing to taunt Capps as he scored in front of Milledge on the HR. Acta apparently said something about it when Dukes returned to the dugout, and Dukes yelled back angrily. At that point, other players got between them, but Dukes was still fuming as he went out to RF for the bottom of the 9th. Milledge had to come over from CF to calm him down. However, Dukes, as Ryann notes, refused to accept congrats from Acta after the game.

Nice.

No need to get overly excited about this game. Just another loss in the string of many hundreds of losses since we last fielded a winner. There is another game tonight.

Capps has been successful because he throws strikes. His stuff has worked well so far, and will continue to do so. That doesn't mean he is unhittable. But he can and will make adjustments and continue to be successful. He is the real deal, despite having velocity that is a little less than the average closer.
