"I'm back in form," he said. "It's just bad luck. That's how I see it. I have bad luck right now."--quote by Ian Snell after the loss today.

....hmm....ok......sure.....whatever.....

I was always a big supporter of Ian Snell from day one. He needs to stop talking and start pitching and winning.

He threw pretty well today. Good velocity, his slider was sharp. But he will throw 2-3 really crappy fastballs per inning and they are tagged.

Pitchers make mistakes all the time and get away with it. It almost seems as if Snell is tipping his pitches, since when he makes a mistake, the hitter jumps on it, even though he mixes in sliders and an occasional change with his very plus fastball.

According to Bob Walk commenting today on Snell's fastball, Snell should be throwing a two seam fastball instead of a four seam fastball because the two seam fastball has more movement to it.

Of course it's bad luck for the Pirates when teams are hitting off of them, that's a given! I stopped following the game when it became 5-1 early. Snell's stuff looked good in the first inning and looked like it fell apart shortly after.

I'm certainly not challenging Walk's knowledge, the stuff he's forgotten is probably more than I'll ever know, but I would retort that it may have to do with Snell's lack of control. Of the two, the two seamer is less easy to throw for strikes, Ian's been struggling in this regard, so it may make more sense for him to throw the more accurate, albeit straighter, four seamer.

Snell did have bad luck, in that some of the hits against him in that big inning were not hit hard at all. Also credit the Cardinals for hitting some decent pitches.

But the biggest problem is his location. He was simply getting too much of the strike zone on most of the balls that were hit. He also wasn't mixing up the location enough.

Bad Luck....edited from the Shawshank Redemption

ANDY: Bad Luck......It floats around. Has to land on somebody. Say a storm comes through. Some folks sit in their living rooms and enjoy the rain. The house next door gets torn out of the ground and smashed flat. It was the Pirates turn, that's all. They were in the path of the tornado. (softly) I just had no idea the losing would go on as long as it has. (glances to him) Think the Pirates will ever win again...even a world Series?

RED: Sure. When I got a long white beard and about three marbles left rolling around upstairs.
