Duke did fine in the first. He gave up two runs on a home run, but he threw strikes. He was ahead of all but Glaus in the inning and struck him out. NO WALKS.

How bout Nate -- lomg ball Nate

Don't think I've ever heard the Pirates announcers get that excited about a play by the opponent, I'll have to see that diving catch by the Braves outfielder.

It was a very nice catch, but not he all time catch of a career. He layed out fully to nab it

Duke looked terrible on the bunt but the re-play shows that he tried to hold up his throw cause Freddy wasn't at the bag. He was playing way over toward the 2nd base bag. So, E-1 and 2nd and 3rd.

Now, liner to short right and Nady throws terrible to the plate on tag. It goes way up the 3rd base line and put Chevez in position to make a short toss to third and got the runner.

We just look sloppy again tonight. Luckily they only get one.

At least it was a fairly quick inning for Duke.

Easy play or not, Chavez is I believe 3-3 on nailing baserunners so far.

Announcers just mentioned Russell "seriously considering" taking Sanchez out of the lead-off position. Yes, please.

Shit-- Jack is limping again. His face showed some pain and disgust. He's re-injured his calf. Probably needs to sit.

freddy swings at garbage. No wonder he can't hit worth a dime.

The Pirates really do not have the talent for Jack to be hurt and Sanchez to stink, and have any hope of playing well.

Freddy swings at the slider, down and away, a remarkable percentage of the time. He basically never hits that pitch hard. He is probably batting about .100 on that pitch. He has whiffed on that pitch, in the dirt, numerous times.

Why doesn't he just take any slider away? What is he worried about? Whiffing and batting .100? Seriously, the results would not be worse if he simply told himself, "I will not swing at sliders away."

Yet another lead-off hit (double by Jack) and nothing to show. Good Lord. When this team does get decent starting pitching, they can't hit.

Top of the 7th, one out single by Chavez wasted..
Two out, runners on 1st & 2nd.. Jack Wilson grounds out.
What is our batting average with runners in scoring position? .200?

This is a typical Pirate game when they throw in the towel. They turn on the flashing neon sign saying "WE CAN'T HIT" and "WE CAN'T SCORE ANY RUNS".

We're just about (if not) dead last in every single statistic ever created for the sport of baseball in the entire league. That's pretty much all you need to know whenever wanting to know where the Pirates rank.

He looks exactly like Dave Parker did when he was batting against Steve Carlton. The problem is that Parker always went fishing for STEVE CARLTON'S slider away, while Sanchez is fishing after every outside breaking ball that bounces his way.

Yes I'm being optimistic, but I think there can be positive taken out of last night's game.

- A quality start out of a pitcher not named Phil Dumatrait. So he gave up a blast to Pujols, big deal, so does 98 % of the league. I thought Duke pitched fine and it was much-needed for this rotation.

- They nearly came back and won it which just goes back to my point that this team likes to rally (of course, the fact that they always need to rally is far from being positive). On the other hand, it's quite frustrating that, identical to the first game in the last series against Cincinnati, we rallied for 3 runs in the 9th when only scoring a single run before in the game.

- Jason Michaels has proved to be a very solid bench player.
