Interesting. The part I don't 100% buy is this: "The move was made to give the Pirates some long relief, particularly in light of two poor starts the past two nights by Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny. The latter lasted just two-thirds of an inning last night and gave up six runs."

While Bullington will probably be long relief, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a shot in the rotation before long. I'm not sure who would get bumped, but I think it's a possibility.

Bullington was a starter at Indy, therefore he should be able to go longer in relief appearances. Moreso than Salas. Bullington's role will be punching bag. Maybe he'll surprise but I doubt it.

Bullington is not good enough to move into the rotation, but right now, if he makes a few decent showings in long relief and Gorzo shits the bed again, we might see him get a start or two, with Gorzo moving down to Indy. But don't expect Bullington to fare any better than Gorzo, I think it would be more to get Gorzo straightened out than anything else.

Pretty sad when you are in dire need of pitching and this is the best you can get out of your minor leagues.

Lol. The job also comes with a paid-for ticket to Japan in 2 years!

Actually, Bullington can buy his own ticket out of the bonus money he was paid to sign. But hey, the Pirates saved $250,000 more that they would have paid to Upton, so all is good.

A guy with a 3-6 record and a 5.86 ERA just got promoted. Is that a bigger indictment of the Pirates' staff or Indianapolis' staff?

Man those are depressing numbers. I'd say that they are an indictment of the whole organization. I hate this phrase but 'they are what they are' applies here.

We certainly have a lot of work to do to become competitive, don't we ?

Those are actually good numbers.

Seriously.

He started out going 0-6 with a 18.something ERA. He's won 3 in a row and brought his ERA down into single digits from double.

He had a horrific start, but has turned it around.

I'll take the Bullington we saw the last couple times out last year, if that one is around.

Then everyone can have their fun making "No. 3" jokes.

Here is an overview of Bullington's recent starts at Indianapolis:

Code:
Date  OPP  W L ERA S  IP H ER BB SO
May 08 RIC 1 0 1.29 0 7.0 7 1 0 3
May 13 RIC 0 1 7.94 0 5.2 9 5 2 4
May 20 LOU 1 0 1.13 0 8.0 6 1 0 8
May 25 SWB 1 0 1.80 0 5.0 6 1 2 7
Totals     3 1 2.81  25.2 28 8 4 22

Fewer walks by far than his start, but still giving up a lot of hits. Not a good recipe for success in the majors - see all the other Pirate pitchers who give up a lot of hits.

What if bullington is phenominal out of the bullpen? Would he be considered to try starting role?

I'd be very surprised if they didn't have someone skip a start in the next few games to let Bullington get one in. Medical reasons (which are probably true) will most likely be cited.

Definitely. It isn't likely to happen, but it isn't impossible.
