Just curious -- which announcers do you all prefer?

I'd say Lanny >> Greg
Walk > Wehner >> Steve

I generally find all of them listenable, though. Thoughts?

I really like all of our guys. The only problem with Wehner is his lisp, but he's the most knowledgeable and the least "homer" of the color guys. I really don't mind anyone though and during the winter I miss all their voices.

Lanny>Walk>Steve>Greg>Wehner.

Like them all tough. I have the MLB Extra Innings pkg. so I see a lot of games around the country and our guys stack up against them all and are better than most.

I love Walkie. Greg Brown can be obnoxious at times, but he can also call a good exciting play. Lanny has a bad sense of humor, but he's hard not to like. Steve Blass has grown on me, I really like him now. Wehner knows his baseball, but he's a simpleton-not bad though.

With how bad the Pirates have been, we really need a combo of good baseball talk/random thoughts while we're down 6 and 15 games under .500 in July. I think we have that.

I really enjoy everyone except for Wehner. I can't stand listening to him garble words.

Walk is by far the best. He is a good announcer and really knows the game of baseball, though I sometimes disagree with his strategy. Lanny is probably second as he is a solid play by play guy, though my lone criticism of his is that he never gives the score when he is on the radio. Jon Miller once said he keeps an egg timer in the booth and announces the score every time the sand runs through. Lanny often goes entire innings without giving the score, which is a problem when you just want to check in and catch the score. Of course, sometimes when the Pirates are up, the inning goes faster than an egg timer...

Wehner is probably as knowledgeable as Walkie when it comes to the game, and I really have learned a lot since he joined the team. I just wish he wasn't such a yinzer when it comes to speaking.

I try to never listen to Greg and Steve. I can't stand Greg's cute-sy calls (La-la-la-la-roche! Adam Bomb! Bay day! A Jack Jack! and so forth). He is only steps away from being another John Fedko, and that's about the meanest insult I have ever uttered.

And Steve...what can I say about Steve. No one gives a crap what he shot on the golf course that day. Steve has told me about his golf game, pressure washing his deck, and even advertised a garage sale he was having, but doesn't ever provide much insight about the game.

I prefer Brown over Lanny, but the gap has closed some. I think Brown has gotten much worse over the last year or two. Walk is one of the best color guys in the biz as far as I'm concerned....his diction isn't great, but he is very knowledgable and isn't a party line guy. I have always enjoyed Blass, he is more insightful than he gets credit for, but he asks for it by being so corny most of the time (I can certainly relate). I don't like Wehner much....he's hard to listen to and, while he knows the game, he often tries to magnify a point to a degree that he loses credibility....in other words, the longer he talks the less he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. He has provided for some levity in my house, though, since my sons and I get lots of weird looks when we start speaking Wehnerese.... "Pleash pash the schpagetti and schalad dreshing"

Overall these guys are pretty good. They all have their good points and bad points. I like the former players better than the career broadcasters. Lannie and Greg can be really phony sometimes.

Walk is best overall, but sometimes he belabors a point to the extent that you want to smash the television into tiny little bits to make him stop.

When I watch or listen to a game I obviously want insight into the game from the color guy and to know exactly what is happening from the play by play guy. But baseball games can be long and in the Pirates case bad. Because of that I like guys with some personality and good story telling. That is why I like Walk the best. He knows the game and has a very good personality. He also has a knack for getting along well with both Lanny and Greg. I also don't mind Blass. I know many do but I kind of enjoy his down home approach. He also knows the game and I really like listening to his old baseball stories. Whener annoys me. I know he can't help his speech problem but it drives me nuts. And he drones on and on to make a point that could be made in half the time. As for the two play by play guys...I'm not sure I like either of them a whole lot. I like when Brown is with Walk because they have a really good chemistry. Lanny has kind of worn out his welcome with me. He laughs incessantly at stuff you know he doesn't REALLY think is funny and he also constantly tries to force comments out of the color guys by asking stupid questions.

I detest Greg Brown.

Interesting. To clarify my original post, it's Lanny > Greg for PBP, and Walk > Wehner > Steve for color.

Two things in general surprise me so far:

#1. I'm a bit surprised how many people are irritated by Wehner's "speech issues". I think the guy is knowledgeable and effective. I mean, the much-loved Myron Cope's voice was more grating, IMO (and Myron was great!).

#2. The lack of any real consensus, except maybe that Walk is very good. I thought it'd be much more pro-Lanny and anti-Greg, but it's been mixed.

i am going to throw my vote towards lanny for pbp and walkie and blass tie for color, i really enjoy blass's stories, which you get to hear quite alot of when the pirates are down, and i think i just like the way walk thinks and explains his points.

I like Steve and Bob best but can not for the life of me distinguish their voices from one another.

Like 'em all as well, though I'm probably prone to the radio guys since that's how I get most of the games these days.

They're all pretty good...but yes, Greg Brown can get annoying, "Raise the Jolly Roger" or how he adds flair to some players name pronounciations...

It used to annoy me when he'd pronounce Esteban Loaiza...Staybon Loaiza

Just call the dude's name the way everyone else does and get it over with

I like Lanny, Bob, and Steve... the rest can get lost. Wehner drives me nuts with his explainations. Dude, the only people watching baseball are knowledgeable ex-players or coaches or baseball fanatics. I understand the infield fly rule, no need to have a 3 inning dissertation.

Greg Brown says some awkward things sometimes and there is like some lengthy silence, has anyone ever noticed that? And is there a rift between Lanny and Bob? Or Greg and Bob? Sometimes I think there is.

I like all of them but Greg is my favorite. He makes listening to a game very exciting. Why do you guys not like him?

Some think his game calling is contrived and phony. Plus, his John Sterling-esque homerun calls get rather tiresome. (I really hope he's dropped the whole "Bay Day!" thing.)
