The Milwaukee Brewers signed Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun to an eight-year, $45 million contract.

The contract includes this season and a seven-year extension, meaning Braun will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season, general manager Doug Melvin announced Thursday.

The deal exceeds the six-year, $31 million contract signed by Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who fell short in the rookie balloting.

Braun hit .324 with 34 homers and 97 RBIs last season after a May 26 callup. He has hit nine homers and driven in 29 runs so far this season, batting .287.

I know that we don't have a playerlike Braun or Tilowitski. If we did, would we be willing to take the chance based on one or one plus years of playing time. I assume that the money is guaranteed.

You have to take risks but if there is injury or he becomes a one year wonder...

Do you guys think that this is a good strategy for small market teams? What about these two signings in particular? Yes or no?

My personal view is that I would want 1+ years of production to lock someone up like that. But NH came over from the Indians, and they have consistently locked up young guys to deals like this before they are arbitration eligible, so I would expect that if we have any players that fit this profile (McCutchen and, um, um, um....well, McCutchen) we would pursue the long term deal.
