Finally, the Pirates completed a trade with Tampa Bay to keep reliever Evan Meek, their Rule 5 draft pick who was removed from the 40-man roster 10 days ago. The Pirates will send the Rays an undisclosed amount of cash.

Best of both worlds. We keep his arm in the organization but he's not hurting the current team.

Acquired for cash, and no player(s). Very good outcome.

Of course, it says something about the player when all the Rays wanted for him was cash...

Oh well, I hope Meek makes the Rays regret that decision.

What it means is that the Rays didn't have anyone to remove from the 40 man, which is what they would have to do if they took Meek back.

I've never understood exactly how this works. So the Rays would have had to put him back on the 40 man to take him back but the Pirates don't have to put him back on to keep him?

Yeah, I'm not sure ZM is correct either. The whole reason the Pirates could draft him was because Meek was not on the Rays' 40-man. Why would the Rays have to put Meek on the 40-man now in order to keep him?

Because in Pittsburgh or any other MLB team, he has to be on the 25 man.

The P-G notes section is what I give for reference. DK is the one who stated he had to go back to the 40-man, and htat is why it would be easy to do a cash transaction.

DK posted a correction to that this week...the Rays would NOT have had to add him to the 40 man.
