Game 1 (Duke vs. Jurrjens)

Pirates

Sanchez - 2b
Mc Louth - cf
Bay - lf
Doumit - c
Michaels - rf
La Roche - 1b
Bautista - 3b
Bixler - ss
Duke - p

Freddy got a lead off walk in the bottom of the 1st but Nate the Great grounded into DP.

Duke's having a lot of trouble commanding his fastball. He's getting a lot of ground balls, but with him falling behind so often, and really only throwing an 89 MPH pitch, if he can't get better command the second time through the lineup will be a real problem.

Don't look now, but Bixler is beginning to look like he belongs in the middle infield.

Now if he could only look like he belongs at the plate.

Bixler just made a great diving play on Tex's ground ball to end the top of the third. I don't think his glove will ever play as a starting shortstop, but he is looking a lot smoother in the field as of late. He should be a good utility guy for us for the next couple of years.

I'm more concerned about his ability to hit the ball. I'm very weary about the future of SS for the Buccos. I admit, I was one wanting to trade Wilson too. Boy do I miss him.

Yeah, SS is probably our greatest positional need in the organization. Having said that, SP is a pretty desperate need too. I think I still would have traded Jack for Jair Jurrjens and just kept Izturis and dealt with it.

I see Sanchez committed a throwing error. Any "eyeballs" on the game that can offer some insight?

It was a slowly hit groundball that Sanchez had to come in on and he double clutched before he threw. That said, it ran through my mind that his shoulder soreness may have accounted for it being so low.

No TV coverage in Pittsburgh...unless its on TBS??

And to think, I have no work to do here this PM and could have gone down for both games...were it not nut-numbingly cold. A doubleheader would be a great time to try out those all-you-can-eat seats...

Zach's really dodging some bullets so far. 5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, *3* E but 0 runs. How long can he keep this up?

I don't know if I agree with this small ball.. we had runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. I'd rather take my chances with Bautista.

What the? Bixler hit by a pitch??

Ollie -
Cold day.
Runs could be hard to come by.
Just a thought.
Pinch hit for Duke here? I would. Get those runs now.

No runs in the 6th is a must. Do not take the foot off the Braves' throat.

Freddy sooo belongs in the leadoff spot. Thanks to Nate's power surge John Russell finally made the right move.

We're looking at a six game winning streak, fellers. Would love to see two more quick innings out of Mr. Duke..
