Mine has to to be Jason grilli. He has been the most consistent player up to this point.

Hard to pick just one. While Grilli is a good choice, I think I would go with Locke. There has been so much turmoil in the rotation with injury, but Locke has been nothing short of amazing this year.

Honorable mention to:
McCutchen
Marte
Alvarez
Martin
Melancon

neal huntington, with all the injuries the pitching staff has sustained, he has done a masterfull job having backup pitchers ( who all seem to throw mid 90's with good movement). In the offseason this board gave him a lotof greif about guys like gomez and mazzaro and they have done a great job of filling the gaps

Pedro. I can't believe I'm typing that. When he started to hit consistently, the team's results improved significantly. I think he's the guy they most need to perform to succeed.

I'll go with Alvarez but it could realistically be any three of he, Locke or Liriano.

There can be a valid argument for Alvarez, Locke, Grilli, Melancon, Marte, and Martin. Unreal, I can't even answer because I couldn't choose.

Good Question! I like IA's read on things, but have more faith of late in Melancon than Grilli. Martin is an unsung hero for his work behind the plate and Marte is learning to read pitches and hit. Locke is the only starter now that started at the beginning of the year. Starting pitching has been awesome......lets hope it continues with whoever may get plugged in.

Co MVP's

Marte-When he gets on base, we score runs and seem to have a better chance to win.

Jordy Mercer-His D has been very good of late and he continues to get on base. My outlier.... 8-) 8-)

Has to be Martin.
He has made all the difference in handling the pitchers, not to mention his ability to throw out runners and his batting has been a plus.

If we're talking players only (I was serious about the Clemente thing; not sure who brought it up first, but so far they're right!), then it depends on if we're talking strictly this year or not.

A few guys stand out: A.J., Melancon (or Grilli), Martin, and Pedro. Marte and Cutch obviously have a case, too, but they're so consistently good they're almost 'penalized' for it.

Mercer is more ROY, 'most improved' or 'sixth man' at this point; a final tweak that has given a much-needed boost.

The reasoning(s) would be:
A.J.: As Rochester has pointed out, he's been a leader from the minute he's arrived. His presence/tutelage has clearly rubbed off on Locke and possibly others, too. Maybe not 2013 MVP, but 2012-13 MVP almost assuredly.
Melancon: 'Shark' gets the nod over Grilli because we knew Grilli was tits last year. 'Shark' has not only rebounded in a big way in '13, but provided an identity for the 'pen. Grilli's an All-Star, but, like A.J., Melancon looks like he's the 'glue guy', the 'clubhouse fave'.
Martin: The upgrade from Rod Barajas is beyond statistical. He's been an all-around dynamite Catcher who has earned his $ and surely added significant (arguably incalculable) WAR to the 2013 Bucs.
Pedro: We all knew that a consistent or even semi-consistent El Toro would translate to W's. Pedro's bat is a game changer and it's been much-needed. If nothing else he may be 'most improved'.

The Pirates have been so good that you could go down the line and hand out individual awards (and there would be battles for each one!):
MVP (statistical): Cutch, Marte or Martin
MVP ('chemistry'): ??? Too many to choose from ??? (A.J. probably)
Offensive ROY: Jordy
Gold Glove: Martin
Silver Slugger: Pedro
CY: Liriano
[Rolaid's] Relief: Grilli
Pitching ROY: Cole
Comeback Player: Shark
Most Improved: Jeff Locke

I agree with Martin, already hitting better than McRajas did for the entire year. Not to mention calling games and veteran leadership.

But most of all he has stopped enemy lineups from looking like a rule in a co-ed softball league I used to play in where the batting order was XY-XX-XY-XX. If you walked a guy, he immediately went to second. That's what I saw a lot last year.

I agree. While so many wins have been thanks to the team...Pedro has won a few on his own. He is right around .250 now. I can certainly live with that. His defense has been pretty damn good too. I was there for the shot last night. His hits just electrify the crowd AND the team!

If he can get his average up to .260...continue to take some walks and get clutch hits, I don't care if he strikes out every other at bat!
