Dear God the M's are SO inept that it's not funny. USS Mariner must be livid right now.

They sent down Dustin Ackley specifically to 'find his swing' and learn the OF and he did EXACTLY that in about a month.

So his reward is to be called up and... benched?!

2012 Clint Hurdle-Jordy Mercer : 2013 Eric Wedge-Dustin Ackley (only x10)

What's left of Seattle fans will not shed a tear when Wedge and Jack Z are sent adrift.

Can't keep relying on the bullpen regressions happening in low leverage situations. It's gonna happen. Long season, we've been fortunate thus far that the bullpen has been as solid as it has in high leverage situations.

It still surprises me that the Pirates didn't end up with Wedge. With Huntington's Cleveland connection I predicted it the day Russell was fired.

Agreed, I would add however that I can't say I'm too keen on Hurdle now making it a norm of using Wilson and Mazzaro for multiple innings, mostly because neither really have the make-up for it (Wilson because of his control issues, and Mazarro because his history would tell us he's drastically overachieving). I realize that a lot of the bullpen arms are on pace for record IP totals but at some point I feel like some the more conservative gestures like these might catch up to the team quickly.

Consider it a V2 rocket dodged.

M's fans loathe Wedge.

I don't love Hurdle's usage rate of the pen either. I'm hopeful that maybe Gomez can stabilize it a bit when he winds up back there. Mazzaro in particular makes me nervous for some reason.

Some other random thoughts:

I think Ackley is terrible. He raked in the PCL, but man....PCL. Just can't get past that after he put up a sub-600 OPS in the bigs.

And in fairness to Hurdle wrt to how he uses Mercer compared to Wedge and Ackley....Mercer's defense still terrifies me. The bat is playing really, really well though. Better than I expected for sure, and I think maybe being a Jed Lowrie type isn't a terrible thing. Hopefully the future staffs are more geared to K's and less to contact.

Also, man we really scuffle against good pitchers. Don't think there's a move to fix it, it's pretty much team wide. Just gotta let them grow through it together for the most part.

Even if you're right, would you start Endy Chavez, Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez (and others) over him?

He's still only 25, was a #2 overall pick, and was once a key component of the M's future. You should probably see what you've got, right? What's the downside? The M's are going to lose >82 (probably >90) games regardless.

The M's problem is general developmental woes and questionable GM'ing. Because of that now they have a surplus of 1B/RF/DH types who are clogging their pipeline and stealing PT from younger guys with potential.

If Ackley is a bust, keep him in AAA. Why call him up to rot on the bench while fan favorite Raul Ibanez (think Jack Wilson/Pirates) plays the worst OF defense in the league? Or just trade him.

The M's have no 'plan'. They're aimless.

Nice to see Melancon get the save. He's been outstanding all year. Great to know they have him until 2016.

The Bucs just swept a five-game, west-coast, inter-league, road trip...

Can someone mock up a picture of a white-robed Clemente shining his good graces upon the Pirates from the heavens, please?

Did what they needed to do against the teams they faced. Positive sign.

Actually, Blogg'n Bob did a feature on this the last couple days on his blog in the PPG. Shows pretty solidly that this is not the case. Most are on line to get to their norm. A couple go slightly over (not Grilli), and a couple actually go DOWN on his projections.

Its a point I've seen made a couple times now. That while we see these guys a lot, they really are not being overused or pushed beyond their limits, or at least a reasonable uptick for the year.
