Hurdle clearly has some kind of bias towards Barmes. There's no way that guy should be playing every day. I'm one who doesn't mind the idea of a defensive SS who can't hit, as long as we have good enough pop elsewhere. But the problem is, I don't even feel Barmes is THAT good defensively. If you're going to have a "defensive SS", then he should be really good defensively, in my opinion. Not just kind of good or passable. If it's like that, then you might as well give a guy like Mercer, who has more potential with the bat, the opportunity.

When I think of defensive shortstops that can't hit, the first two I think of are Mark Belanger and Rafael Belliard. Their lifetime batting averages are .228 and .221, respectively. Barmes will never sniff .220 again. He's done. Whatever he is gaining for us defensively he is giving away by giving the opposition 2 automatic outs in a row in our order. That's huge. I'm not saying Mercer is the long term answer, but he needs to be playing now over the other two.

I've said it before, we need to be looking for a lead off hitting shortstop with a minimal amount of service time, and pay the piper.

The payment will be a superstar player rental like Zack Greinke who the Brewers turned into Segura. There are very few true SS prospects in the minors and even fewer quality young SS in the majors. There is hardly any supply and tremendous demand. There really isn't much in the draft beyond prep SS JP Crawford.

I don't see any "pay the piper" scenario here. As said, few teams in the MLB have a legit SS, and any that have a GREAT prospect, why would they want to trade them? The offensive SS is a rarity in today's game. Plus, we're in no position to deal anybody anyways. Nobody is going to trade prospect for prospect, and prospects are all we really have to deal. Who, on our MLB Roster can we deal, that has enough value, that we don't need, for a SS?

The closest I could see would be Tabata or Jones, and it's not like either or both of them would net anything special.

FYI, Mercer played 2B while Harrison played SS last night, perhaps they are prepping in case Walker has to go on the DL today. Mercer has 2 errors in 23 games at SS this year, its all about range apparently.

Burnett is on the mound tonight. He K's like 10 plus every game, so there cuts down the chances of Mercer getting the ball hit to him...
And they cut Sanchez!

Yeah, the player I think we need is scarce, but he exists.
Tampa has Yunel Escobar, Hak-Ju Lee, and Tim Beckham.
Atlanta's Andrelton Simmons makes Tyler Pastronicky available.
Ruben Tejada still has some upside left, and has Wilmer Flores pushing him.

There are also guys like Erik Aybar, Alcides Escobar, and Jose Iglesias out there to scout. I'm assuming we are out of Jurickson Profar's league, as well as Didi Gregorius, but you never know.

Case by case -
Beckham can't hit or play SS and is suspended
Yunel is a clubhouse cancer that doesn't hit well enough to justify risk on a 1 year deal
Lee is good prospect and the Rays don't trade prospects
Simmons is untouchable, they wouldn't trade him for Upton
Tejada, I do like him, but he is likely unavailable
Pastornicky can't hit and is a bench guy at best
Flores isn't really even an infielder, he'll play 1B or RF
Alcides is a top 10 MLB SS he would cost a ton
Aybar is not available, LAA is win now and they have no other options
Iglesias may be available if Xander proves he can play SS, he is Rey Ordonez lite
Didi wasn't even a great prospect and he cost Trevor Bauer a top 20 SP prospect

Boston continues to be SS central, I think a scenario where we would take on Iglesias, Marrero, or Vinicio would be possible, but each of those guys has flaws/issues.

937's Dan Zangrilli reporting that Mercer will, quote, "likely be brought up from AAA" according to "sources."

If this is true, it almost assuredly means Walker to the DL unless they did the obvious and released McDonald.

If Mercer is actually given any playing time under Hurdle will be the bigger question.

Hurdle will let Mercer languish on the bench. If I were Mercer, I would be waiting to get out of this organization.

I was just saying that the other day. It seems like when this group makes up their mind on someone there is no turning back. I'm sure that isn't uncommon around the league, but this group sure does seem that way. Not sure if it is Hurdle, NH, or a 50/50 split...

So if Barmes manages to get suspended, he is Beckham-lite?

Well they changed their mind on Walker, if Jordy hits he will get a chance.
