Left-hander Francisco Liriano, lights-out perfect in his most recent start, is stepping up to Double-A Altoona for a Saturday start of four innings or 65 pitches. Hurdle proclaimed him "three starts and ready."

Charlie Morton is considered "one start behind Liriano," according to Hurdle. Morton, working his way back from Tommy John surgery in June, went three innings in a Thursday-night start for Class A Bradenton. He allowed three hits and two runs, picking up two strikeouts and throwing 33 of 44 pitches for strikes. According to eyewitness accounts, his fastball reached as high as 96 mph.

Jeff Locke hasn't done much to boost my confidence in him, but I am glad he's gotten a chance to show something this year. Our rotation as a whole hasn't been too bad though, it's good knowing there's two decent arms coming back within the next month or so.

No telling how good any of these guys are going to do, but it seems like Locke, Sanchez, and McDonald are essentially competing for one spot.

JMac will be on the DL soon enough. Don't forget Karstens, he is throwing off the mound now too.

Is JMac actually hurt, or are you just speculating? He certainly doesn't look like the pitcher he once did.

I'm hopeful about Liriano.

Pitchers don't generally lose 2+ mph off their fastball during their prime years without an explanation. Morton went down this exact road last year in April. His velocity was down about 2 mph, his stuff wasn't as sharp, he was getting hit more, the team and CM claimed it was not an injury, the results continued to suck, eventually he goes and sees Dr. Andrews and its TJ time. I'll call it an educated guess.

Actually, other than A.J. and one good Wandy start, the rotation has been awful. The Pirates are last in the majors in innings pitched by starters and near the bottom in ERA.

No wonder we have a tired bullpen. We had to take a rainout in a game we were winning for them to be rested. This looking to the bullpen in the 5th inning is getting old.

What's the latest on Wandy?

If Morton is throwing 96 and he can get that sinker back, that's very good news for the Pirates.

Wandy is the starting pitcher tonight so hopefully he is fine.

Raining here though, it's going to be nasty tonight and may not be playable.

The White Sox/Twins game has already been postponed here because of the cold/wind/sleet/snow. Winter won't end.

It is supposed to stop raining here by 5pm, but it will be windy and cold. Its supposed to stay cold for Sat night too, which is certain since that will make all 3 games I have attended freezing cold.
