This was not meant to distract from the horrific events of Monday, just to let the original poster know that Bob is no longer on board.

The increase in violent events in this country is disturbing and concerning at the highest level. The "fake" news telecast on the late-90's Mike Judge spin-off cartoon "Daria" was called "Sick Sad World" and today our "real" news telecasts seem to fit this title shockingly well.

It was quite a bit more than that.

There was plenty of reasons to argue with Bob's views in the discussion, but he was told to F' off, called a hypocrite, coward, and dishonest.

That's all true, but I guess we disagree on the chosen "personal attack" quip ... in my experience, such a term is used for examples like someone vitriolically saying something about one's own family, personal faith, etc. Perhaps JL argued a bit too passionately and aggressively about a subject that was clearly significant to him, however I think villainizing the guy as to write in black and white that he practically ran someone off the board is a bit harsh and perhaps Bob is just as culpable for not knowing what he was getting into while choosing to jump into the debate from the other side. While I certainly don't condone as such unwarranted, like I said before, it doesn't seem too uncommon for buzzwords like the ones used to fly around fairly frequently in online political comments and disagreements, and that's why I found it odd that Bob then chose to quit and label it like he had been bullied.

And yes -- the intent here was not to distract from the thread's subject matter, did not mean to derail.

I thnk that the more salient point is similar to what I wrote a long time ago. A Message Board is sort of like a neighborhood bar. Some bars are loud and raucous; some are more subdued. I'd liken this place to the latter. Although spirited debate exists, the debate has rarely fallen into use of profanity and personal attacks. Yes, I've gone after my share of others here with whom I vehemently disagree (Exhibit A - Craig Wilson). Yes, my opinions have been chided and derided from time to time (Exhibit A - Value of Runs Created Chart). However, with few exceptions, the debate has been vigorous but not "over the top." That is why I continue to frequent this Board and why I have done so since either 1999 or 2000.

A counter-example would be the folks at Change in Atmosphere. The debates on that Board are far more raucous, more profane and littered with vitriol. There may have been a time in my life that such debate would have attracted me. At this particular stage in my life, not so much. That's no swipe at CIA. Its just my perception of the differences in approach.

I think that the Landis/B in B exchange was something that you'd more likely see at CIA and it turned Bob off. Others that have posted here and attempted to get in such debates haven't lasted long. So . . . we lost a customer. I enjoyed Bob's take on baseball and he is missed. I personally disagree with some of his politics but I always found the debate with him to be in accordance with Bertie's signature.

I continue to proclaim that reasonable people can disagree and that such disagreement can be articulated reasonably. The lack of reasonable discourse these days saddens me. Profoundly.

Sounds like they caught the asshole. I know it's not right, but I wish his victims could torture him then kill him.

Apparently not, but there is video footage of someone leaving the second bomb. Plus, the idiot is apparently making a phone call.

My wife and I were wondering the same thing. Where did they get the pictures? The guy in the red with the backpack is eerie because it looks like the same backpack as the exploded one.

No, if he is in fact truly a hypocrite it's not a personal attack, it's an accurate description.

The FBI just released this, not the New York Post. This is legit. This are the guys.

That was to be assumed since the FBI already released pictures of the real bad guys, thus the NY Post was in trouble.

The NY Post got it wrong? Shocking....

[quote="Barrys Dopers"]This was not meant to distract from the horrific events of Monday, just to let the original poster know that Bob is no longer on board.

I didn't know that Bob in Boston was no longer on the board, and I have no idea what happened since I was kind of sporadically reading over the past few months.

But, I feel badly since I met Bob a couple of times at Pawtucket games. We watched one game together, and I found him to be thoroughly enjoyable and engaging. I really liked him. We talked baseball, travel and life. What happened here?

If Bob is reading this, I hope you come back, Bob. We miss you.
