Just saw the PitchFx from yesterday - 89.4mph average on his fastball, peak at 93. JMac averaged 91.8 last year, meaning we have a 2.4mph drop in velocity. There have been numerous studies that SP velocity stabilizes quickly in a season, as in its not like guys add much mph as they go in the year. Last year JMac was pretty steady with maybe a 0.5mph drop late in the year. He had never had a start with an average south of 90. His two seamer and curve were also slower than ever before.

I heard one of the radio guys remark something like "is it possible JMac got skinnier this year?". This is something to really watch.

Oh, if you are wondering AJ and Wandy had normal velocity in their starts so I doubt its artifact or something.

Is it possible sacrifice a little velocity for better control?

Possible, but this is more than a little velocity and its not like his control was great yesterday.

Good observation, BD.

There were many a comment during the game about J-Mac's drop in velocity.

Mosdef something to keep an eye on as the season goes on.

Watched the replay last night and my take is that J-Mac's velocity was definitely down from last year. He was routinely sitting at 90 mph yesterday, and not 93-94 like last April.

Not sure what to make of it. Velocity is not everything, obviously, but J-Mac at 93-94 with that killer curve is a better pitcher than J-Mac at 89-90.

As an update, he was still down in Arizona but better, the average was around 91 with a 89-93 range. He needs to pick it up about 1.5-2 mph more to be where he normally sits.

Still low velocity, back in the sub-90 range on average. Something clearly isn't right with him. Last night he got killed on that loopy curve that he was hanging belt high and a changeup that wasn't any better.

Hard to tell if its physical or mental with him. Might be a good thing if it is something physical and he can go on the DL.

If it were something physical, that isn't like a major Tommy John-type problem, wouldn't it have likely healed up over the offseason?

His velocity wasn't down last year (even at the end), this is something new. I don't think its a psychological issue that causes a loss in velocity. It could be a mechanical one.

You don't need great velocity if you have great command. Ask Greg Maddux. Maybe Mac is losing it. Hadn't the Dodgers moved him to the field at one point before the Dotel trade?

I agree, BD. They better really take a look at some film. He was hitting 95 at times a couple years ago. Not the right time of year for dead arm. We'll see.

Okay I read up on his days with the dodgers. They drafted him as a pitcher. After a bout with tendinitis where it shut him down for nearly 2 seasons (2 seasons?) they decided to try him in the field. That didn't work out well so they moved him back to the pen in the minor leagues. When then picked him up in a trade and threw him in the rotation. Wow! ! That's crazy. He was darn good the first half last year. Not sure.

Tendinitis maybe?

After reading Hurdle's comments about Mac Donald and possible health issues, I find it amazing that he said that he had not spoken to him :? :? :? :? :?

Got it. Was under the impression that it was.

Well, you can't let him go out there in his next start throwing 88-mph meatballs down the middle. That probably won't work.
