Can we possibly win a series in Milwaukee to finish the trip?

We have white flag Sanchez on the mound tomorrow night, lets not let a slide begin.

The problem with Sanchez is that he is burning the bullpen.

The pen has worked hard because of the large number of close games, and one of Sanchez' patented 3 1/3 IP efforts is just not going to cut it.

He's the most egregious example, but we've got a lot of pitchers contributing to a soon-to-be-overworked pen....

The projected SP when Sanchez is slated should read: Sanchez/Gomez, because we all know Jeanmar is entering the game by the fifth.

Holy sh*t. The worst teams on that schedule are Philly and Milwaukee, and both of those teams are capable of beating the tar out of the Pirates. It's distinctly possible that the Pirates are 10 games under .500 on the morning of Monday, May 6. If the PBC is within 2 or 3 games of .500 after this stretch, I'll consider it a huge victory for the team.

Ten games under? I'll take the under on that and give you a million to one against! :D

Go Bucs!

What's the word on Karstens? Certainly he should be ready by now. It's been a month!

Karstens is still quite a ways off. He is throwing in the bullpen but that's it.

Liriano had an excellent start in AAA last night. They want him to make 2 more starts for Indy which puts him in our rotation on May 11. Morton is about a week behind that schedule.

Sanchez just needs to give us a chance for tonight and maybe 2 more starts after that.

St. Louis is in first place and we are a half game back. Great setup for the weekend series. 2 out of 3 and heading to Milwaukee in first place would be wonderful.

I'm calling for at least 2 homers from Pedro this weekend.

That and him giving up 4 runs digging us a hole.

The plan to have Liriano make 2 more starts instead of one seems ridiculous right now. He threw 79 pitches last night, he will hit 85-90 next turn on the 30th, he should replace Sanchez on May 8th vs Seattle. In the mean time Irwin or Gomez should be starting tonight and May 1st. Sanchez is well beyond done.

Yeah, I don't get that. Next rehab start, he goes 6 IP, 90 pitches.

So the one after that - in the majors, I would hope - he can go 7 IP and up to 100 pitches.

That is more than Sanchez will EVER give the team, and is within the workload build-up.

Shockingly, there are four SP today with worse 2013 xFIPs that Sanchez (Kazmir, Gee, Nicasio, and Feldman). Small sample certainly, but humorous nonetheless.

We are the 2nd biggest betting underdog of the day just ahead of Houston at Boston.

I get what you are saying, Ralphie, but ...

You and I both would never bet against the Pirates.

Ever.

It's like betting against your own kid. Who cares if you "win" - you already LOST.

I have news for you, Pirates fans: We are a twenty-six games into The Gauntlet (with one game rained out), and, after dropping 2 of 3 to the Milwaukee Brewers (in Hell), the Pirates are an excellent 15-10 so far (and 16-12 overall). Do you know what that means? It means that the Pirates are guaranteed to finish The Gauntlet with a record above .500. Huzzah!

Three games against the underachieving Nationals at PNC Park this coming weekend.

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM L 3-0 (1-3)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM L 1-0 (1-4)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM L 6-2 (1-5)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 5-3 (2-5)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 6-5 (3-5)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM L 10-2 (3-6)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 6-5 (4-6)
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 3-1 (5-6)
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM W 10-7 (6-6)
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM L 10-6 (6-7)
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM Postponed (rain)
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM W 5-0 (7-7)
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM L 6-4 (7-8)
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 6-0 (8-8)
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 3-1 (9-8)
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM W 4-2 (10-8)
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM L 3-2 (10-9)
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 2-0 (11-9)
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 5-3 (12-9)
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM W 6-4 (13-9)
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM L 9-1 (13-10)
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM W 5-3 (14-10)
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM W 9-0 (15-10)
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM L 10-4 (15-11)
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM L 12-8 (15-12)
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM W 6-4 (16-12)
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM

At this point, the Pirates would need to take 2 of 3 from the Nats to be 18-13 (my revised prediction) when we wake up on Monday, May 6, 2013. Well done, Bucs.

The last two vs. the Nats will be tough.

Locke vs. SS & Wandy vs. Gio... *gulp*

Luckily, the streaky J-Mac gets a home game vs. the anemic M's offense, followed by a 'clash of titans' when Jeanmar faces off vs. Aaron [fourth team in four years] Harang.

Strasburg hasn't been great so far, but with our luck he'll come out looking like Nolan Ryan.

Gio's been struggling pretty hard, too.

Strasburg, though, can have a 10.00 ERA and I'd still be afraid of a complete game 2-hitter.

I have tix for Saturday, just got lucky with Strassy scheduled, he and Harper better get healthy on time! I saw Strassy threw a side session yesterday and was fine. Harper likely just has a bad bruise on his side from hitting the wall Tuesday.

The Gauntet is over. And in those twenty-nine games (one game rained out) your Pittsburgh Pirates posted a record of 16-12 (now 17-14 overall). Though the team dropped two frustrating games on Saturday and Sunday, you have to be pleased with them on this fine Monday morn.

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM L 3-0 (1-3)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM L 1-0 (1-4)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM L 6-2 (1-5)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 5-3 (2-5)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 6-5 (3-5)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM L 10-2 (3-6)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 6-5 (4-6)
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 3-1 (5-6)
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM W 10-7 (6-6)
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM L 10-6 (6-7)
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM Postponed (rain)
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM W 5-0 (7-7)
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM L 6-4 (7-8)
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 6-0 (8-8)
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 3-1 (9-8)
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM W 4-2 (10-8)
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM L 3-2 (10-9)
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 2-0 (11-9)
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 5-3 (12-9)
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM W 6-4 (13-9)
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM L 9-1 (13-10)
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM W 5-3 (14-10)
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM W 9-0 (15-10)
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM L 10-4 (15-11)
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM L 12-8 (15-12)
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM W 6-4 (16-12)
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM W 3-1 (17-12)
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM L 5-4 (17-13)
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM L 6-2 (17-14)

The Pirates finished The Gauntet with a record three games over .500, three games out of first place in the NL Central, and one-half game out of the Wild Card. Not too shabby.
