This would take more than Porcello, though — perhaps Brennan Boesch and/or a mid-tier prospect, too.

I like that thinking.

Interesting points about Porcello, all.

It does seem like he's a natural fit, seeing as how DET seriously needs 'pen help.

And with the transition to the NL, plus having a better D behind him (and maybe having some 'pressure' taken off and/or having 'worked through the flak' in his transition to the show?), RP may see a 0.50 or more decrease in ERA (and/or good spikes other kep stats like FIP/xFIP, WHIP, etc.).

Interesting to consider, but even more tempting since it is a distinct possibility which NH and co. very seriously need to pursue.

Angels In Contact With Tigers About Rick Porcello
By Mike Axisa [December 15, 2012 at 9:21pm CST]
The Angels have been in contact with the Tigers about Rick Porcello, reports Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. The Pirates, Padres, Rangers, Phillies, Twins, and Royals also have interest in the right-hander, though Knobler says Detroit doesn't have interest in Pittsburgh closer Joel Hanrahan.

Drafted 23rd overall in 2007, the 23-year-old Porcello zoomed to the big leagues after just one season in the minors. He owns a 4.55 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 120 starts and 691 2/3 innings. His 52.3% ground ball rate helps make up for the lack of strikeouts. Porcello earned $3.1MM in 2012 and projects to earn $4.7MM in his second trip through arbitration this winter. He's a Super Two and will be eligible for free agency after 2015.

The Tigers re-signed Anibal Sanchez a few days ago, rounding out a stellar front-four that includes also Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer. Porcello and Drew Smyly are the front-runners for the fifth starter's spot. The Angels have acquired Tommy Hanson and signed Joe Blanton this winter, but they're still looking for rotation depth behind Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson.

Not a big deal. Hanrahan will have another great season and once again be a top end closer in this league. If the bucs are out of it at the trade deadline the bucs will move him for something better. Detroit's loss. Not to mention they need a closer.

They could be saying that to gain leverage but who knows.

His re-up deal was fairly cheap compared to the market, but would you have liked to see the Pirates pay the prospect price to acquire R.A. Dickey?

If the Pirates somehow do nab Porcello or a solid FA arm, it may be for the best.

D'Arnaud is considered a top 10 MLB prospect, right? Like on the Gerrit Cole level? If so, no.

The price tag was essentially a top 20 prospect and a second top 100 guy. Something like Taillon + Heredia, too steep in my opinion.

The Rangers still want to add to their bullpen, and Rosenthal suggests they could make a play for Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan. The team is also exploring other bullpen options via trades and free agency. Hanrahan’s projected salary of $6.9MM limits interest from the Dodgers and Tigers, Rosenthal writes. Wouldn't it be something if they managed to get Olt jor Joel?

That would be incredible. Then you package Olt with Taillon and Tabata for Giancarlo Stanton. :)

ESPN talking about the next prospects traded

Quote:
Next Top Prospects Traded
"Jameson Taillon | RHP: Taillon, 21, was the Pirates' first-round selection in the 2010 draft. At the time, I thought they should have taken Manny Machado instead, the player the Baltimore Orioles plucked at No. 3 overall right after the Pirates took Taillon. Last year, he posted a 3.55 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP across two levels of Class A and should start the year in Double-A. I would guess he'll arrive in the major leagues sometime in 2014, but the Pirates' need for more, better position players could force them to move Taillon if they get the opportunity to move him for a difference-maker like Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton or Giancarlo Stanton."
