Is that a deal that interests you?

Buster Olney reporting it's being discussed.

I almost think I'd rather see him packaged with 'spects for a bat (if we could).

What say you?

We discussed this a few weeks ago, I think its pretty fair. Not exactly the kind of haul we would have liked to get, but not terrible either.

I'll add that Rick Porcello would be a better return and perhaps a better trade match.

If that's all Hanrahan could bring back, I'd rather see the team keep him.

I'd like to see the Pirates get a solid SP for Hanrahan. I think Joel is expendable on this Pirate team. Capuano? I would rather see Rick Porcello in a Pirate uniform instead of Capuano like Barrys Dopers previously posted.

What is Haranhan's value at this point? I guess that's the question that needs to be asked.

I'm not sold on Capuano for Hanrahan. Chris Capuano will be 35 next August. Does that mean anything? Then again, Barry Zito will turn 35 a few months before Capuano does.

Would you take Barry Zito (if you could) for Hanrahan?

I believe I saw someone (Perotto maybe) write that the Tigers would not deal Porcello for Hanrahan.

Nice wish though- I like that much better than Capuano.

I'm with you. Capuano would be just another roster-filling, short-term move. Porcello would be a much better fit next year and for a few years after.

Cole/Taillon/Porcello would be a pretty nice 1-3, don't you think?

Right. Surely they can afford to pay him and then see who becomes in need of a back end arm as the season progresses. In the meantime you keep your own bullpen strong.

But if he comes out of the gate and struggles, his value plummets. Something to think about.

His value drops on opening day no matter how he does, since any player who does not spend the entire season on your roster no longer brings a compensation pick if he goes free agent at the end of the year.

Do you really think that would come into play with Hanrahan? The team getting him wod have to offer him somewhere around $14 mil in order to get a pick.

I don't see the compensation pick as being part of his value.

That's my fear. Hanrahan was "effectively wild" this year, which worries me because there's a good chance he will be ineffectively wild next year.

Yep, I don't disagree. I just think it is worth that gamble. Right now(and maybe it will change) I just don't like the offer/talk about what we get in return for him. More value to keep him, even with the risk of him going south IMO.

RE: Capuano

Aside from his injury and age concerns, consider: He's expendable to the Dodgers and they're obviously willing to waste money to attain their goals. With the 1-2-3 they currently have, they would probably give him away if the opportunity arose.

As such, why would you trade something of value, both tangible (on-the-field performance) and intangible ('trade value'), for him?

Given the rumored offers for Hanrahan, I'm guessing that MLB is convinced that he isn't all that valuable.

I'd have to think the apex of Hanrahan's value was in July of 2011.

At this point, it's better to keep Hanrahan and hope that he pitches well in 2013, raising his value before the trade deadline. I'd rather gamble on that than trade him for rags.

I agree, they don't have to trade him for nothing. That said a quality #4 SP is not nothing, particularly with the current rotation. One year of a solid 2 WAR SP is likely to be more valuable to us than one year of Joel.

I've got to agree with you on that.

I don't think that teams have soured on Hanrahan as much as they've started to recognize that closers have been overvalued for quite some time now.
