The Pirates have agreed to sign free agent reliever Jason Grilli to a two-year deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Former MLB player Gary Sheffield represents the 36-year-old right-hander.

Grilli enjoyed tremendous success in the Pirates' bullpen from 2011-12. He posted a 2.91 ERA with 13.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB.9 in 58 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh this past season and earned $1.1MM. Grilli's strikeout rate increased yet again in 2012, when he struck out 90 of the 244 batters he faced.

Grilli ranked 33rd on MLBTR's list of top 50 free agents.

I can live with two years in the $4 million per range. It facilitates dealing Hammer.

If we can add a quality SP to the rotation (this could be Cole), then I am okay going into next season with what we have. If Cutch can put it together for an entire season, Pedor as well, Walker stay healthy, and Marte improves like he should, Barmes does what he did the 2nd half, and the addition of Martin I think we will be okay.

I like that he wanted to come back.

2 years, $6.75 million. Not bad.

While everyone thinks this means the Pirates will trade Hanrahan, I'd still only do so if he would yield a Gavin Floyd-level starting pitcher or better. Otherwise, just keep 'em both and have a solid back-end of the bullpen.

It would be a very Pirates move to trade Hanrahan. I'm afraid doing so would weaken the bullpen in a major way. The bullpen can be a strength for the Pirates, I'm just not sure about the depth.

Don't think the Pirates will be interested in shelling out that much to two back end guys. They said so much. And unfortunately I don't have faith in NH being able to bring back anything truly decent in return. He already has sold his own guy short.

I agree with the last two posts. If you can't get proper return for him then keep the bullpen strong. Just don't think that is what will happen.

Yep. It's nice to have a couple of strengths to build on. And our bullpen was uber-dominant for a while there last season. And Grilli and the Hammer were a big part of that.
