And who are likely on the block.

* James Shields, SP -- what would it take for two years of a guy who could front-end the Pirates' rotation? I dunno, but outside of Gerrit Cole and the core (Cutch, Pedro & Walker), I'm thinking about offering a major package to the Rays.

* Danny Espinosa, SS/2B -- this guy's only 25 years old, he has power, and he can play shortstop pretty damn well. The Nationals are committed to Ian Desmond at shortstop and have Lombardozzi and, soon, Anthony Rendon to play second base. Might be a good time to check in with Rizzo and see if Espinosa is available.

* R.A. Dickey, SP -- why not? The Mets don't want to pay him and, at his age and risk level, he may not cost a ton in terms of prospects. Question is, would he come and pitch well without the security of a long-term deal?

Any one of those three guys would make the Pirates significantly better in 2013. And in the case of Shields and Espinosa, better in 2014 as well.

I read somewhere how the Mets are searching for outfielders and seem to have extra pitcheing as Matt Harvey looks like he is ready to go into the rotation...

Maybe Garrett Jones and Snyder or Tabata or Presley for a starter?

I had read "outfield and catching help" for the Mets. Not sure there's a ton we can do there.

Maybe Mike Morse? I've read that there may not be room for him in DC.

If Dickey can be had for lower level guys, I'd love it.

Espinosa is probably the only realistic option there. TB will want the house for Shields (2 years $21 million) and the Mets will likely ask the same for Dickey because he's so cheap for 2013 (1 year $5million). It would make very little sense to pay a high price for Dickey since he'll be gone in one year.

Espinosa supposedly can play SS, could NH flip a CF and prospects to Washington for him? Is he worth a big price tag? I wouldn't trade Marte for him, would you?

Zero interest in Morse, he can't play the field at all and he isn't that great with the bat to compensate, he's a DH.

I'd trade Marte for Espinosa, straight up. Yes. Given his value at SS, I'd do it.

Then I'd sign Nick Swisher.

Where are you getting $15 million a year for Swisher?

New MLB television deal that kicks in soon, rising attendance, and a big 'ole leap of faith that adding Espinosa and Swisher can get the offense over the hump.

In all seriousness, the Pirates need a shortstop far more urgently than they need a corner outfielder (which is what Marte is in Pittsburgh). So I'd do the deal.

This is what I was going to say. I'd ship Marte away in a heartbeat.

A Dickey valuation by Dave Cameron suggests it will cost Mike Olt and Leonys Martin. Just an FYI.

Cameron also answered a question on why Pirate fans disliked the Martin signing so much with "years of bitterness".

Okay, that is just nuts. Jeez, Louise, I cannot imagine a solid No. 2 SP'er getting in return two elite position prospects.

Basically, this would be the Pirates trading McCutchen and Walker in 2009 for a Dan Haren.
