A deal has been made, per a number of sources on Twitter.

Love it. Except for this quote:

"If Martin's deal if finalized, it would represent the most expensive free agent signing of Neal Huntington's tenure as Pittsbugh's general manager, easily topping Clint Barmes' two-year, $10.5MM deal from last winter."

This may turn out to be a fine deal. Time will tell and it's best to let it.

That said, the one troubling thing about this deal (if true---and aside from the possible 'cost effectiveness' that might have been J.P. Arencibia) is the waving of the white flag concerning Tony Sanchez.

Please forgive what may sound like 'obvious hind sight logic' here, but... When you are a team in the midst of a looooooooong losing streak like the Pirates and you are blessed with a top-5 pick, you cannot 'stikeout' (sorry for the pun) on those picks.

Zach Wheeler, Mike Minor, Drew Storen, Mike Trout, Brett Jackson... to a lesser extent: Jacob Turner, Aaron Crow, Alex White and Rex Brothers...

Did we know those guys would turn out better than TS? No. However, when you draft a guy so high who was at the time considered a 'reach' and then subsequently fill the role he might someday [and was drafted specifically to] play with expensive veterans it shows a clear lack of vision.

This is not to say that (overall) NH is 'inept' in drafting/scouting or otherwise, but...

What a waste of a top pick.

Here's hoping all the best concerning Russell Martin.

But lets weep over the Tony Sanchez era.

I hear you NS. That said, i'm not bailing on TS yet. Martin isn't exactly a Top prospect. He's a stop gap.

TS may fail. No doubt about it. He may also yet blossom, despite the odds.

Tonight, I choose to celebrate our upgrade at the position. In late 2013, ask me again. I reserve the right to change my mind :)

Edit: I initially said "in late 2103".... That's pirate Fan speak....

For the money he signed for he needs to be more and he very well could be.

Even if he would only develop into a servicable backup catcher it would be nice. It would still be a terribly wide of the mark shot, but at least it would hit something.

Yeah, please don't misconstrue my tone.

I am honored and grateful that the Pirates have spent money on FA of need. And I hope that Martin's first child will be a MASCULINE child... and I pledge my ever ending loyalty to the Pirates... :D

It's just... can the Pirates get a mulligan on TS???

2 year deal? Outstanding.

Not being a three-year deal makes me feel a lot better about it. On an aesthetic level this is very pleasing to a Pirates fan given that the Rangers were reportedly hot in pursuit of Martin as well (and honestly, I'm a little surprised that NYY didn't match this, but who knows what they have up their sleeve). Most of all I'm just hoping for a big defensive improvement.

No. 12 likens it to Littlefield's acquisition of Matt Morris.

He really hates the front office.

Catcher....check

Now on to a starting pitcher.

Then lead off hitter.

Or vise-versa.

I like this move...it's not a huge upgrade, but it's an upgrade and the two years gives Sanchez plenty of time to get it together...

I'm relieved. The rumored three year deal would have been a very bad idea.

Agreed. I can live with this. Hopefully the new TV revenue results in an increase in payroll and this contract looks like a bargain.

Now go get a SP or 2 and a couple of arms for the pen.

I don't really like it but I agree on the two year sentiments.

If he can be excellent defensively, hit about 20 home runs per year, and get his OBP over .325, then I'll be happy with it. But that's the baseline for Martin to be worth $8.5 million per annum.

Now, please tender Jeff Karstens, NH...

I saw that tweet. Ridiculous comparison. Martin may be an overpay, but he hasn't lost all value. Martin's WAR over the last three years: 1.8 (2010), 2.4 (2011), 1.5 (2012). It's reasonable to believe that Martin can come it at a 2+ WAR for one of the two years he's with the Pirates.

Hey! Both Russell Martin and Michael McKenry wear #55. This signing therefore has the potential to tear the clubhouse apart. WHO WILL WEAR #55?

Based on this alone, terrible signing.

This is a better and more complete explanation of DK's comparison:

http://blog.triblive.com/dejan-kovacevi ... tt-morris/

I still don't fully agree with him, but it's a reasonable opinion.
