I'm sure that we are all familiar with the fact that motivational phrases or quotes are often posted or painted on the inside of team's locker rooms. I'm curious . . . and I ask this in all seriousness . . . what would your reaction be to the following phrase being painted on the inside of a locker room?

Live each day so fully that if you died at the end of it you'd not regret the things left undone and take pride of the things accomplished.

I would say it's wordy, obtuse, and impossible to live up to.

I'd sarcastically say, "yeah, that will get us over the hump" and then go out and perform just as well as if nothing were on the wall or if they painted "EHHHH WHATEVER" in Comic Sans.

I would wonder if the guy who put that on the wall had heard something from my doctor.

A Roberto Clemente quote: "Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth".

A Mahatma Gandhi quote: "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever."

I don't care so much about it being impossible to live up to, it is a motivational quote after all. But, it's just stupid, as you say.

Much better: Winning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing.

Or these:

Vince Lombardi: Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Vince Lombardi: Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

Or, you could go metaphysical:

Mike Singletary: Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.

Michael Jordan: Just play. Enjoy the game. Have fun.

Or, perhaps my favorite sports quote of all time:

Steve Garvey: The difference between the old ballplayer and the new ballplayer is the jersey. The old ballplayer cared about the name on the front. The new ballplayer cares about the name on the back.

All good ones.

Maybe also worthy of regard (and related to certain recent events):

Do or do not. There is no try.

Not a fan of hyperbolic stuff like this, nice sentiment, but not even the best of us could hope to live up to this everyday. I would largely ignore it.

I asked the question because, based upon what I've read so far, what I quoted - "Live each day so fully that if you died at the end of it you'd not regret the things left undone and take pride of the things accomplished" - is the translated meaning of "Hoka Hey." While certainly not defending, excusing, chastising, etc. any or all of Kyle Stark's conduct, I'm thinking that if his email signature included the translated version of "Hoka Hey," it would not have been the subject of such great ridicule. The notion of living each day to the fullest such that . . . if one were to face the Grim Reaper at the end of the day . . . you'd have no regrets may be unrealistic but it is certainly not ridiculous.

I think it's too long. For my money, the Notre Dame locker room exit at the door is a great one; 'play like a champion'. BTW-- I'm not a ND fan.
