With all the hype about Morgan leaving town and Michaels coming in from Cleveland, it went unnoticed that the Pirates added a 25 year old pitcher who was with the Cubs a few seasons ago

Quote:
The Pirates signed starter Juan Mateo, who spent half of 2006 in the Chicago Cubs' rotation, to a minor-league contract. Mateo, 25, rocketed through the Chicago system that year and went 1-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 10 starts for the Cubs, but shoulder trouble dropped him back to Class A last year.

Yes, I saw that. He may never amount to anything, but he's worth a minor league deal for sure, and he's only 25.

Its a good risk to take, from some of the stories I saw on him, he throws 92-93 and his fastball has some good movement on it...

I believe he throws a cutter too...

He had an ERA over 5 with the big club and was in single A last year. Why am I supposed to be excited about this?

He was in single A last year because of arm problems...

He had a 5 ERA coming from AA

He's 25 and is right handed...

I'm not saying lets get in line for playoff tickets or anything like that, just bringing up the team added another arm who might have some upside to a minor league deal...

Sorry Elmer, Neal couldn't work a deal out to bring in Johan Santana...

I didn't want Santana. Where did you get that? I'm just not all that excited about this particular signing.

I never said for anyone to get excited over this signing...where did I say "Lets get excited the Pirates added a 25 year old pitcher with 1/2 a season of MLB experience!!!!"?

I just mentioned the guy can throw 92, and has a cutter...

Relax man ... I'm not saying you said that. I'm chiming in on this topic. I don't see this as a major signing and I'm not that impressed by it. It's my opinion on the topic of this post.

Who said you were supposed to get excited about this?

No one. Dude, I'm allowed to voice my opinion on a team signing on this board. I'm not excited about it. No one had to tell me to be excited to permit me to voice an opinion about a personnel move.

I think we should show interest in every player in the organization (including Craig Wilson! Ha!) Seriously it's fun to follow the Indianapolis Indians, Curve, etc. I'm excited to see the Hickory Crawdads here in July!

You're not.

If you remember Craig Wilson was one of the best hitters in baseball a few years ago. (In the opinion of this board)

Finally the time has come for all the Wilson haters. They can no longer be challenged to go back and find a single post to support that lie.

I'm not even going to enter that can of worms. Those that were here know what was said.

A 25 year old pitcher with stuff in the 90s is a better signing than a 32 year old utility infielder. Even if he doesn't amount to anything in Pittsburgh, it's still nice to see the organization taking a limited chance on a guy who was once seen as a pretty good prospect.

You already chose to open that can of worms. Your statement has been made here many times before, and every time it was made one poster or another would challenge the person who made it to produce a single post stating that Craig Wilson was an All Star, or a future Hall of Famer, or one of the best hitters in baseball, depending on the claim being made. Not a single post was ever produced.

But it's so easy to flame and redirect on a message board!

The one thing I love about Wilson is that the guy wants to be in Pittsburgh. I'll take 5 of those guys over one really talented guy who hates it in the Burgh.

I find it interesting that one who says Wilson was a nice bench/platoon player to have, now is a Wilson-hater.

Because hate is the easiest thing to do when you're a Pirates fan.
